How to travel with a Puppy

For all the pet lovers out there, isn’t it such a heartache to leave our pups/pets behind when we go off to have fun on a vacation. I could never imagine how people do that but I guess sometimes you don’t have a choice (in case you are going on a cruise where puppies are not allowed or going to a country where they need to be quarantined before and after etc.). At other times, people might find it overwhelming to arrange for the paperwork and ticket for the pet.

While I can’t help the first reason but can definitely be of help in the second one.

As you might know if you follow me @thekaykronicle or follow Archie @awwforarchie that last year we got two triple coated teddy bear faced teacup poms. Needless to say that we lucked out big time as they are both such a good mix of cuteness and character. That being true, still there was a big hitch in this scenario. WE TRAVEL A LOT. And my kids as well as husband refused to travel without them. So I decided that no point fighting this cause rather it will save time and money if I hurried up with all the formalities including paperwork and ticket arrangement.

I will run you through the steps in case it’s the complexity of the procedure which has stopped you from travelling with your furbaby in the past.

When all else fails take a nap.

  • The first step is to make sure ur pet is microchipped
  • Second is the shots
  • Third is wait 21 days after the rabies shot
  • Make sure your pet is protected against Heartworm and ticks. I use Heartgard and nexgard for that
  • Completion of shots certificate
  • Health certificate within 10 days of travel
  • Paperwork for the particular area filled and signed by the vet n stamped by the CFIA Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
  • Calming chews, benadryl, snacks, food, in registered bags (preferably actual packaging) and water …wet wipes poop bags, napkins, brush, Dog Carrier, pee pads, leash harness

When people ask me, “what do you do, I say, “whatever it takes”.

I have not failed, I have just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.

And you are all set for travel.  Every airline has a special allowance for in cabin and in the cargo placement for pets.  Also every airline has a specific requirement for the size of the dog, the size of the carrier and their weight separately and together.   You must check and book them in advance.

Have a safe trip with your pet.  For a comfortable journey, its best to lightly calm them and keep their treats and water handy, feeding just a little at a time but doing so from time to time.
